Ever experienced a day where you just simply can not see anything good about your life? I’m willing to bet that we’ve all been there…
When it rains, it pours they say and before we know it, we let the negative chatter in our heads convince us that a bad day/ week/ month/year equals a bad life.
As a result, we ended up feeling helpless, at a loss as to how we can escape the stress and pain. As time progresses, we found ourselves sinking deeper into the black hole of despair.
It may sound difficult to believe but we all already have THE antidote to this sort of disheartening situation within us. Unfortunately, most of us have walked around not realizing or have not taken full advantage of it.
Curious as to what it is?
The simple answer is gratitude.
Counting our blessings aka expressing gratitude for everything that we already have instead of dwelling on the issues and/or challenges that we are currently facing is a powerful tool to alleviate pain and suffering caused by difficult situations.
This is because it instantly allows us to shift our perspective from negativity to positivity.
I recognize that sometimes when things get pretty bleak, it seems really hard to utter the word “Thank You” and find anything positive in our lives but the truth is, we always have something to be grateful for.
For instance, perhaps you’re finding yourself in a financial predicament and though it may be nearly impossible to be thankful for financial abundance at the moment, you can always choose to recognize other blessings that you may have taken for granted on a daily basis.
This can range from everything from your health, to access to necessities (i.e: food, running water, and electricity) and/or the unconditional love of friends and family.
Chances are, most of us are guilty of taking countless things (and people) for granted and unfortunately, it is not until they, be it material things our health, or loved ones, are taken away from us do we realize the true value of these precious gifts.
Keep in mind that the things that we often take advantage of, millions are praying for.
When you express your gratitude for the blessings you’ve received, no matter how small they are, inevitably, it’ll shift your focus away from lack and negativity.
It’ll allow you to attract more of what you want and perhaps this even includes the solutions to help you tackle your challenges or issues more effectively.
Moreover, the act of counting your blessings is completely free and can be done at any time and anywhere.
There are many ways to express gratitude, this includes simply saying “Thank You” whilst thinking of all the things and/ or people you are grateful for, reciting prayers, acknowledging our thanks to a power that is greater than ourselves, or keeping a gratitude journal.
Personally, in addition to prayers, I’ve found that keeping a gratitude journal is one of the most effective ways of expressing my “Thank Yous” on a regular basis.
The key to consistently expressing gratitude and turning it into a habit is to enjoy the process instead of looking at it as a chore.
When you visualize while writing down the things you are grateful for, it helps you acknowledge even further how blessed you already are – how good you truly have it already.
As Oprah so famously said “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.”
Gratitude is a powerful arsenal, when practiced regularly, it’ll enable you to go through life with a perspective of abundance and prosperity instead of lack.
With this mindset, you’ll come to realize that no matter what challenging situation you find yourself in, you have what it takes to prevail.
Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Trust that not only will you survive, you will thrive!
