Whenever we have difficult decisions to make, many of us often turn to our loved ones for words of advice. In addition to weighing out the pros and cons, they would usually resort in telling us to “trust our gut” or “listen to our intuition“.

This advice would inevitably lead us to the real questions which are “how do we differentiate our thoughts from our inner voice?” and “how do we even begin to trust our intuition?”

Hypothetically, let’s say that you have to make a tough decision where you have to choose between 2 or more enticing options.

Unlike our thoughts which stems from the brain that usually comes up with analytical answers as to why one option or path is better than the other(s), the intuition (instinct, gut feeling or inner voice) resembles more of a strong feeling.

It sometimes manifested in the form of quiet whispers from the heart to choose an option that is usually the complete opposite of the brain’s (logical) choice.

And this is where it gets tricky.

Most of us have a tendency to opt for the option that makes the most sense for us. Hence, it’s no surprise that we often find ourselves deciding on the most logical and reasonable choice rather than choosing one that felt most right to us.

In the past, I too overrode my instincts with my so-called logical thoughts because I did not trust my inner voice enough to make decisions for me.

I thought it was down right reckless to let something that I can not see to make decisions that could potentially change the course of my life.

Though it took a couple of years of a learning curve, I became aware that things often goes awry whenever I choose to trust my extensive list of pros and cons over the whispers of my heart.

As time unraveled, what seemed to be the better choices turned out to be anything but.

Fortunately, as the years go by, I have come to realized I wasn’t alone. After sharing my experiences to the people I trust, they too expressed that they could have made better decisions if they had only listened to their “heart whispers”.

As it turns out, even the great Oprah Winfrey was once quoted admitting that every single big mistake that she had ever made was because she had chosen to ignore her intuition.

In contrast, looking back, whenever I made decisions based on my intuition, I seemed to have made the choices that benefits me in ways that I could not have ever imagined nor foreseen prior.

So how can we start to listen to and be more attuned to our instinct?

Every single one of us was born with an intuition – with no exception.

However, our ability to listen and trust our inner voice depends on how much faith we have and how much work we’ve put in to connect with it.

If you happen to be skeptical about the power of your own intuition, try to look back and recall an experience(s) when you decided to go with your guts aka intuition. Remember how it guided you to make a different decision or to act differently than you would if you had done what your mind told you simply because you felt “something is not right”.

This could be anything from where you may have been shielded from harm because you decided to not go drive a certain dangerous highway route to that unpleasant feeling you got when you first met someone and your instinct turned out to be correct.

If you’re to recall these moments, you’ve listened to and already trusted your instinct more than you realized. Now, all you have to do now is to trust it a little bit more often.

For those who have yet to experience these divine moments, be open to your feelings, get quiet and listen to what your inner voice is telling you during moments you most need guidance and support. You might just find that you are able to make even better and more effective decisions doing so.

Dr. Wayne Dyer, a renowned author, speaker and spiritual leader, said “If prayers is you communicating to God, then your intuition is God communicating to you”.

Regardless of your religion, spiritual beliefs, or whatever you choose to call a force that is greater ourselves (God, spirit, the Universe etc.), our intuition is its way to communicate with us.

Choose to listen to our intuition and trust that this divine voice will always offer you unparalleled support and guidance.

It might just lead you to a life that you’ve always dreamed of, one that is filled with joy, abundance, love and fulfilment…Namasté.
