No matter where we came from, what our backgrounds and our beliefs are, we all share one thing in common: we all want happiness. We yearn for that day when we finally become happy yet for so many of us, happiness feels ever so elusive

What we don’t realize is that the happiness we so desperately chase after, is already within our grasp.

Despite what society tells us, happiness is not found in material possessions or external achievements. It doesn’t magically appear when we land the perfect job, buy a bigger house, or even when we find a romantic partner. While these things may bring temporary or bursts of joy, they don’t guarantee lasting happiness.

This is especially true when it comes to romantic relationships. Many people equate happiness with finding “the one,” believing that doing so will complete them. And while it can deeply add meaning & joy into our lives, true happiness cannot depend solely on another person, be it our partner, friend, sibling, or parent.

If we rely on something else or someone else to “make us happy,” we risk overlooking the power we already have within ourselves. A healthy relationship, no matter its form, is best nurtured when both individuals have already chosen happiness and inner peace from within.

Happiness Is a Decision

It took me a long time to finally “get it,” but I’ve come to understand that happiness is not a destination – it’s a decision. Each day, we have the choice to see the good in our lives, to appreciate what we already have, and to embrace the present moment.

Happiness doesn’t require perfection. In fact, it thrives in imperfection. Our joy depends on perspective: if we choose to believe we are happy, then we are. It truly is that simple.

This, however, doesn’t mean we should ignore life’s challenges. After all, struggles are part of being human, and they often shape us in ways that help us grow stronger and wiser. By cultivating gratitude, even for the challenges and obstacles we face – we open the door to resilience and lasting joy.

Daily Practices to Invite More Happiness

True happiness is not built on one big breakthrough moment, it grows from the little things we do every day. Whether it’s taking time to pause and breathe, practicing gratitude, journaling, spending time in nature, meditating, or even savoring a quiet cup of tea can shift our perspective from lack to abundance. These practices help us reconnect with the present moment instead of constantly chasing “what’s next.”

When it comes to relationships, whether romantic or otherwise, choosing happiness means showing up as your authentic self and appreciating the love that already exists. Instead of expecting a partner to “complete” you, allow them to complement your already fulfilled sense of self. That way, love becomes a joyful extension of your happiness, not the source of it.

Gratitude Unlocks Inner Peace

The more we focus on gratitude, the more we realize how blessed we already are. Every experience, whether good or bad, carries a lesson and contributes to our personal journey. When we learn to appreciate the entirety of our lives, joy naturally begins to flow through us.

Things do not have to be perfect or ideal for us to be happy. Truth be told, how happy we are entirely depends on our own perspectives – meaning that if we choose to believe that we are happy, then we are happy. It’s as simple as that.
