“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will” — Suzy Kassem

Here’s a situation you might not have expected to encounter when you decided to courageously follow your gut and take that first step toward realizing your dreams: a whole lot of doubt starts to creep in.

Suddenly, the excitement you once felt is accompanied by questions that feel heavy and unsettling. You may find yourself asking things like, “Am I making the biggest mistake of my life?”, “Am I setting myself up for failure?”, or “So… what now? What do I do next?”

If you’ve found yourself asking these questions, fear not. Having asked myself those exact same questions, I’ve come to realize that this phase is incredibly common — especially among those who have taken the brave leap of leaving behind security, predictability, or a “safe” path in favor of following their passion. In fact, many people who have successfully built meaningful, fulfilling lives started exactly where you are now: uncertain, questioning, and afraid.

I’ve learned that doubt and confusion often become inevitable companions after making a course-changing decision. When the safety net disappears, we are forced to confront ourselves, our beliefs, and our fears more honestly than ever before. While it may feel uncomfortable, this stage is not a sign that you made the wrong choice — it’s a sign that you are growing.

Though it’s completely normal to experience regret, fear, or hesitation when stepping outside your comfort zone, it’s crucial to make a conscious commitment to yourself: to continue taking small yet powerful steps forward instead of allowing doubt to take control.

Because the moment we let regret take hold, all the bravery we gathered to begin this journey risks going to waste. Before we know it, we may find ourselves right back where we started — in the mediocrity of a life that feels safe, familiar, and quietly unfulfilling.

First and foremost, give yourself immense credit. Choosing to go after your dreams is not something everyone dares to do. You opted to truly live rather than merely exist — and that alone deserves recognition.

From there, it becomes essential to cultivate a deep belief that you already have what you need within you to make your dreams a reality. You don’t need to have everything figured out right now. As Arthur Ashe so powerfully said, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” That is more than enough to begin.

It’s also important to remember that deciding to pursue your passion is only the beginning of a long, often winding journey. No matter how prepared or motivated you feel at the start, there will be moments when you stumble, lose momentum, or feel completely off track. This is not failure — it is part of the process.

When those moments arise, your ability to persevere will matter far more than perfection. You must learn to rely on yourself, to pick yourself up, and to keep going even when things feel bleak. Without faith in your vision and belief in your capabilities, it becomes all too easy to spiral into self-doubt, throw pity parties, and eventually give up altogether.

The path toward your best life may not be paved with sunshine and butterflies, but if you are truly passionate about what you are creating or offering to the world, you will find the strength to face any challenge that comes your way.

When critics appear, when setbacks arise, and when doubt grows loud, you must become your own number one supporter. Stand firmly by your dreams, even when others don’t understand your vision. These moments are invitations to rise, to reconnect with your “why,” and to reignite the belief that started it all.

Lastly, remember to look for the silver linings — even in the most difficult circumstances. Challenges have a way of sharpening our character, strengthening our resilience, and shaping us into wiser, more capable versions of ourselves.

As Henry David Thoreau once said, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Believe this: choosing the great over the good was not a mistake. Cast aside your doubts, keep showing up, and trust that every step — even the difficult ones — is moving you closer to your dreams. The journey may not be easy, but it will be worth it.
